FirstWorks at the Corners

14 Jul

What a great year we’ve had at FirstWorks @ The Corners! We continue to be amazed and inspired by the level of commitment from our volunteers. This school year, students received school supplies, uniforms, winter coats, Christmas gifts, holiday trips, Easter treats, a pancake breakfast – gardening day, end-of-school “goody” bags, report card rewards, and so much more. THANK YOU to EVERYONE who provided these gestures of love. YOU have made this year so successful!

THANK YOU for providing a healthy dinner and fellowship each Tuesday!

Reading is the focus for third graders. Sarah Cate, Amanda Joy and Jaymie Salley worked alongside the students to help them master this important skill. Reading is so important for success in school and life. The kids completed their year by performing a puppet show for the first and second grade class. They read their lines with emotion and inflection! We were so proud of their hard work. In addition, the story focused on keeping your word when making a promise. What a blessing!

We finished our year with a big celebration! David Pickett, First UMC member and owner of “A to Z DJ Services,” donated his time for the kids to dance….and dance they did! Teachers, students, volunteers and parents all shared the dance floor. Amy Pearson, FirstWorks Director, encouraged everyone to get on the dance floor and have fun – don’t worry about being “cool.” The night ended with prizes for our gardeners (those that nurtured their herbs and kept them growing through spring). Olivet Fellowship lovingly prepared bags loaded with goodies, designed specifically by age and gender. These kids know they are loved!

FirstWorks @ The Corners wants to keep the momentum going through summer so kids do not lose school skills. “Day Camp” will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., June 25 – July 18. First through eighth graders will enjoy age-appropriate fun and educational activities including field trips and a visit to a local college. Breakfast, snacks, and lunch will be provided each day. Contact Amy Pearson (, if you would like to help.

We hope to go to an electronic newsletter in the near future – a more efficient way to communicate and save precious funds. If you would like to be added to our e-mail list, please contact Amy Pearson ( Don’t worry if you do not have e-mail. We will continue to send out the newsletter to those that prefer traditional mail.

The FirstWorks Board decided we are in good shape to move back to Tuesdays and Thursdays when we resume in the fall. This means we need volunteers and Kitchen Angels for two nights! How exciting! Spread the word so we start strong in the fall!

FirstWorks @ The Corners was awarded a $7,000 grant from the Junior League of Memphis. We are so excited to have this incredible organization involved again at FirstWorks. Along with the financial donation, FirstWorks will also receive 10 volunteers for the 2013-14 school year. Thank you, Junior League!

The cost for a child to attend FirstWorks Day Camp is $20 for eight weeks – what a deal! We don’t want any child to miss this opportunity if money is an issue. The cost to provide the camp is more than $20 per child, so any donations are appreciated to make this a successful summer.

As always, please pray that this ministry meets the needs of our families and that we continue to do God’s work in the Highland Heights area.
